Is there a connection between Enlightened ideas and the genesis of modern variations of racism? How did the Enlightenment changed the way we see ourselves? Was the Enlightenment nothing but a rather small elite project by an upcoming bourgeoisie? These are just some of the questions we will encounter throughout the semester.

In this Übung (reading class) we will re-examine central texts of the study of Enlightenment. We will look at both: classic historiography and primary sources.
For the purpose of this Übung, we will understand Englightenmet as a historical age rather than a philosophical project. We will look at cultural and social changes during the time of c. 1650 - c.1800 and we will try to discuss various interpretations of the era.

After attending this class you will have a firm grasp on the main interpretations of the Age of Enlightenment in historiography and will have gained familiarty with key sources.

Active participation in discussions and the preparation of a presentation is mandatory to pass this class.

You are more than welcome, even if you're English isn't perfect!
