For putting and using electrotechnical products standards are playing an important role in the European market.
In the European Union (EU), the regulatory requirements for electrical equipment, such as safety and electromagnetical compatibility (EMC) including functionality, are stipulated in EU Directives or EU regulations.
The person placing products on the European market (usually the manufacturer) has to demonstrate compliance with these regulatory requirements.
As the regulatory requirements are often very general they are detailed in harmonised standards. These normative documents are finally used by the person putting products on the European market to demonstrate that the regulatory requirements are met by means of
own tests or
tests carried out by an independent neutral testing laboratory.
During this lecture, these criteria are considered with respect to the following topics:
