Lehrinhalte
1 Introduction
Aim of the lecture, definition of soil, erosion, denudation, erodibility etc. Soil production rate vs. erosion (incl. weathering), spatial and temporal scales, soils as a resource, environmental role and modern endangering, global overview and historical perspectiv, literature.

2 Erosion processes
Rain fall, overland flow, subsurface flow, rill erosion, gully erosion, mass movements, wind erosion, glacial erosion.

3 Erosion parameters
Rain fall intensity, erosivity, erodibility, slope length, vegetation cover and land use.

4 Erosion risk and erosion models
Mapping, scoring; types of erosion models; USLE, RUSLE; Physical models, EUROSEM, WEPP, LEMs.

5 Assessment of soil erosion
Qualitative observations e.g. mapping; quantitative methods e.g. direct measurements, test plots, experiments (rain and wind simulation); indirect methods e.g. soil catena, colluvial sedimentation, reservoirs, lakes, sediment yield; remote sensing e.g. soil erosion in satellite and aerial images; local monitoring with balloons and zeppelins.

6 Sediment yield and sediment budgets
Routing and sedimentation, river basins and their morphometry; sediment transport in rivers, bedload suspended load, hydrographs, sediment yield, measurement methods; longterm and shortterm sediment storage (colluvium, alluvial fans, floodplains, deltas), terraces and other archives; indicators of megafloods; memory effects due to environmental change; Global regression models and predictive tools.

7 Natural and human impacts
Natural changes e.g. climate, tectonics; Human impact: land use (clearing vs. abondening, river training, reservoirs); long- and shortterm aspects, continent-wide and local effects; case studies from various regions.

8 Conservation strategies
Tolerable soil erosion, strategies for soil protection, Sustainable soil treatment (e.g. agricultural methods, forestation); technical measures
e.g. contour dams, terraces, drainage systems, wind breakers.
