Offizielle Kursbeschreibung
To what extent can private business enterprises contribute to the respect and promotion of human rights? While human rights violations by companies seem to be clearly visible at first glance, the human rights frame traditionally only holds states responsible for the promotion of human rights. The course asks, whether that frame is becoming too narrow in times of globalization and global governance. Examining the United Nations human rights mechanisms and voluntary initiatives, we will discuss the human rights impact made by the business sector, the frame of public and private actors, as well as the limits, critiques, and challenges of business responsibilities for human rights.
