Official Course Description
This course serves as a first introduction to linguistics, the discipline that is concerned with the scientific study of human language. Beginning with a reflection on the specific properties of human natural language, this course introduces the foundational fields of linguistics covering phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics with the aim of giving you an overview of the scope of the discipline and to prepare you for participation in more advanced courses concerned with different aspects of the study of language.

In the course of the semester, central fields of linguistics and theories are introduced alongside the methodology employed in linguistic research. You will gain hands-on experience in methods and techniques of linguistic data analysis and read widely on various foundational aspects of human language.

Please note that this course will be delivered as an online course via the e-learning platform moodle.tu-darmstadt.de. There is no need to register separately on moodle, your course registration on TUCaN will simultaneously register you on the moodle course. All materials will be delivered via moodle and all course communication will also be via moodle, so please make sure you have access to the moodle course before the first course meeting.
