Lehrinhalte
This English for Specific Purposes course is specifically designed for students of mathematics with upper-intermediate to advanced English language skills who would like to improve their writing and oral communication skills in the field of mathematics at university level. The intensive course reviews topics important for written academic English (e.g. sentence structure, punctuation, paragraph development, logical coherence) and identifies common mistakes and pitfalls; special features involving mathematical terminology and notation, and mathematical argumentation are also covered. Basic elements of an academic essay and scientific research paper as well as of oral presentations in mathematics are discussed. Among other activities, students typically prepare, in small groups, a mathematical topic of a general nature for presentation and submit a group essay as well as an individual essay involving mathematical argumentation for grading.

By the end of the course students will be aware of language quality and style in the communication of mathematics in the medium of English. They will analyse and practice written and oral communication
with particular emphasis on mathematical ideas, mathematical argument and clarity and precision in mathematical expression. As a result they will have learnt to express themselves in English at a
level appropriate for mathematical presentations, both orally and in writing.
