Official Course Description
Institutions in art have a rather bad reputation. Institutional critique and theoretical reflection have shown that the white cube of the museum and the concert hall are far from being neutral containers. Rather, they are saturated with rules, regimes of perception and structures of power, which shape everything that is created and presented within them. However, institutions should not exclusively viewed from the perspectiv of critique because they enable as much as they restrict and prohibit: no art without institutions.
In the seminar we will read various texts from the theory of institutions in sociology and philosophy, get to know important positions from institutional critique, and analyze a few exemplary artistic institutions.
