Mapping als künstlerisches Analyse-Tool in der Architektur

Jede Karte, jeder Stadtplan und jede grafische Analyse sind sowohl eigenständige ästhetische Objekte wie auch Repräsentationen realer Situationen. Sie sind damit immer Interpretation und reduzierte Darstellungen komplexer Sachverhalte.

In der Architektur sind diese Analysen allgegenwärtig, doch was wird Analysiert und Kartografiert? Was lässt sich überhaupt adäquat darstellen? Und vielleicht viel wichtiger: wer erstellt die Karten und mit welchem Augenmerk?

Aufbauend auf einer theoretischen Auseinandersetzung mit den verschiedenen Methoden des Mappings, werden individuelle kartografische Darstellungen des Darmstädter Stadtteils "Pallaswiesen- und Mornewegviertel" erstellt. Wir wollen untersuchen wie sich die städtebauliche Analyse mit einem künstlerischen Ansatz verbinden lässt.

Das Seminar erfolgt praxisnah und in engem Austausch mit dem Darmstädter Gestaltungskollektiv "DIESE Studio", welches zeitgleich in dem genannten Stadtteil ein sozio-kulturelles Projekt realisiert.

cartographical truths mapping as an artistic tool in architectural analysis

Every map and each graphical analysis in architectural production is both an autonomous, aesthetic object as well as a representation of something "real". They are always subjective interpretations and reduced depictions of komplex situations.

Architectural analysis and mapping are especially common in urban planning, but what is being analyzed, what is mapped? Actually, which data is fit to be depicted in 2d? And maybe most important: who is doing the drawing and what for?

Starting from a theoretical approach to the various methods of "mapping" in architecture, we will discuss and produce individual maps of the "Pallaswiesen and Morneweg district" in Darmstadt. We want to explore how architectural analysis can be combined with an artistic approach.

The Seminar runs parallel to a socio-cultural project in the mentioned district, executed by the design collective "DIESE Studio". An exchange with both the project as well as the Studio is intended.
