Digitale Lehre
The event will take place as a Moodle course with accompanying Zoom meetings. For more information, please see the course introduction materials posted.
Lehrinhalte
Mass spectrometry is one of the most powerful, and one of the most popular analytical methods in the world, especially for biomolecules. Using this method to its full extent requires a thorough knowledge of how these instruments work. In this module, the MS experiment will be explored in its entirety, with particular emphasis on ionisation methods, types of mass analyser, and fragmentation methods. Application to all types of biomolecules will be discussed, although the emphasis will be on peptides and proteins. MS-based methods for detailed structural investigation, including 3D structure, will be discussed in the lectures. Theoretical exercises will be used to clarify how these theoretical concepts are applied in practice.
Voraussetzungen
Open to all who are interested (at M.Sc. level). A basic familiarity with MS is helpful, but important concepts will be repeated in the first lecture.
Weitere Informationen
Course notes will be sufficient to pass the module. References to additional literature will be announced in the lectures
Offizielle Kursbeschreibung
Detailed understanding of the working of common types of mass spectrometer
Detailed understanding of ionisation and fragmentation methods in biomolecular MS
Understanding of how MS is used to identify biomolecules in complex mixtures
Understanding of how MS is used to study the 3D structure of biomolecules
Ability to apply these concepts in theoretical exercises
