Official Course Description
Political participation is essential to democratic systems. Participation in elections is the best-known and most widely used way of participating in the political process. However, traditional forms of political participation are facing challenges. Participation in elections is declining or remaining at a certain level. Alternative forms of participation, on the other hand, are on the rise. Not only populist actors demand alternative forms of participation, which they expect toincrease democratic quality. Against this background, the seminar offers an insight into different theoretical perspectives on political participation, as well as into current empirical findings.

In the course of this seminar, we will first deal an insight into the central foundations of democratic theories and concepts of political participation. Based on this, we will take a closer look at voter turnout, where we not only shed light on factors that influence voter turnout but also discuss the possible effects of declining or unevenly distributed voter turnout. In a third section, we look at current debates on partcipation and thereby, for example, disucss the influence of populism.
