Course Contents
The students are enabled to understand the principals of application of modern lightweight construction materials, like light metals and high strength and ultrahigh strength steels. On basis of examples of use, the essential challenge of material selection in case of competing materials is introduced. Further important factors limiting the field of application of lightweight construction materials, like in the case of the automotive area, heat treatment, adjusted surface technology and corrosion protection as well as techniques for joining parts of these materials are learned.

Learning outcomes / acquired competence:
After the successful examination, the students should be able:
· to describe the productions of the different lightweight materials and their alloys and to estimate the influence of the productions to the specific properties of the lightweigth materials concerning the applicability,
· to compare the mechanical, physical and electrochemical properties of the different materials,
· to explain the influence of the metallurgy to the mechanical, physical and electrochemical properties,
· to describe different heating methods of the lightweight materials and to estimate their influence to the application load capacity,
· to choose the possible joining techniques with their influence to the mechanical and corrosion resistance,
· to recommend corrosion protections for lightweight materials,
· to describe the technological and economical potential of the lightweight materials and to choose the best lightweight material in relation to a specific application.
