Digital Teaching
Dear students,
this module will be offered as a presence lecture this semester. The first date for this lecture can be found in the list below.
I wish you a sunny start into the semester and look forward to seeing you in the lecture hall!
Best regards and see you soon,
Andreas Blaeser

Course Contents
The term biofabrication describes the development and cultivation of bioartificial, cellular tissues using a variety of biotechnological, biomedical, and materials science and engineering methods, processes, and procedures. A particular focus of the course is the description and application of 3D bioprinting processes for biofabrication.

Starting from the required print preparation steps (bioink fabrication, 3D dataset preparation), the bioprinting process chain as well as the applied 3D printing mechanisms and strategies will be taught during the course. The course concludes with a summary of the current and future applications of this inspiring technology.

Literature
Recommendations for course-related literature will be announced in the first lecture as well as during the current course.

Preconditions
none

Further Grading Information
The lecture is aimed at students in the master's program of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The lecture is intended in particular for students with an interest in solving biological, medical and medical technology problems using engineering methods and procedures. Students from other departments may participate if the examination regulations provide for this possibility.

Official Course Description
The term biofabrication describes the development and cultivation of bioartificial, cellular tissues using a variety of biotechnological, biomedical, and materials science and engineering methods, processes, and procedures. A particular focus of the course is the description and application of 3D bioprinting processes for biofabrication.

3D bioprinting is an additive manufacturing process for the production of living tissue. Hydrogels loaded with living cells are printed layer by layer to generate a precursor structure that can mature into functional biological tissue in subsequent culturing steps. Compared to other biofabrication methods, such as cell colonization or molding, 3D bioprinting has several advantages that are important for the production of complex tissues. These include the spatially controlled and reproducible placement of different biomaterials and cells in a biological structure, as well as the production of patient-specific 3D geometries. Another advantage is the high degree of automation and digitization of the process.

In the course of the lecture, the technologies mentioned will be systematically explained, associated processes and procedures will be prepared in detail and further fundamental knowledge of these innovative technologies in the field of bioprinting will be brought closer to the students.
