This course is designed to help you develop your English language skills for professional purposes. Each week we will discuss a topic of current interest related to the field of architecture and civil engineering, focusing on areas of particular interest to participants. Pronunciation and vocabulary will receive special attention, whereby mistakes form an important part of the learning process. This course will emphasize various forms of oral communication: class discussions, small group discussions with summarizing reports, etc. Exercises to improve your writing, reading and listening skills will also be offered and some general grammar problems will be dealt with. Students are expected to make an active contribution to the success of this class. Course II uses different material than course I. It is not mandatory to take course I first.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be more adept, accurate and fluent when discussing issues in civil engineering and architecture both in written and oral form. More precisely, students will be able to
- understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize the implicit meaning
- express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions
- use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes
- produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices
