Hissing fountains of steam, sulfurous air and bubbling muddy pools. In the Valley of the Devil, volcanic magma brings the groundwater to a boil and catapults it to the surface under extreme pressure. At this site in Tuscany, Ginori-Conti succeeds in generating electricity from geothermal energy for the first time in 1904. Five light bulbs, a dynamo and hot steam - that's all he needs to prove that geothermal energy can be used to generate electricity.

Very similar conditions can be found in Sicily. Due to the high density of volcanic activity around the island, there are geothermal fields a few hundred meters below ground that can be used to generate energy. Following the innovative spirit of Ginori-Conti, the potential of geothermal energy is to be used to convert the almost unlimited energy available into electricity.

The design of the power plant buildings should not be the product of technical and functional conditions or considerations alone. Rather, the building type can serve as a suitable basis for investigating and spatially implementing elementary themes of architecture such as typology, structure, light and space.
