Course Contents
Cathedrals are, of course, first and foremost places of worship and places of prayer. But they are also time machines, memories, places of remembrance, political sites, landmarks, cemeteries and cabinets of art. They shape the cityscape and the identity of the residents, are tourist magnets and monuments, social spaces, concert venues and places of silence.
In this seminar, the most important cathedral (i.e. bishop's church) in the region, the approx. 900-year-old Mainz Cathedral, with its many layers of meaning should be made legible: in text and image, form and function. The seminar participants are each responsible for a specific structural or design element: windows or funerary monuments, medieval or modern, cathedral treasures and church furniture, liturgy and urbanism.
After the various aspects have been presented in the seminar hours, at the end of the lecture period (dates by arrangement) the entire building "from the cellar to the roof" (from the crypt to the vault) is to be walked on, inspected, questioned and read together on three excursion days .
At the same time, the speakers will deal with different text genres that are available on their respective specific topics: art guides and monument inventories, journal articles and museum catalogues, source editions and web presentations.
Participation in the three excursion days is a prerequisite for the performance of the service; In addition, there is an obligation to attend at least 75% of the seminar hours according to the APB.
