Course Contents
The seminar will examine the role architecture plays in manuscripts and books from the 15th to the 21st century. On the basis of 20 selected case studies from this period, we will analyse the relationship between image and text, the modes of representation used (ground plan, perspective, etc.) and the structures of visual argumentation.
The books we will analyze together are written by architects, artists and architectural theorists (e.g. Alberti, Piranesi, Aldo Rossi, etc.) and will be available as high-resolution scans.
In addition, we will have the opportunity to look at original books in the university library in order to get a feeling for their haptics and the different printing techniques.

Further Grading Information
In short presentations (10-15 minutes), a double-page spread from an architecture book is to be described in detail and then discussed together. The possible topics for the papers will be presented and distributed in the introductory session (14.04., from 13:30).
The final assignment will then consist of a written analysis (approx. 500 words) of this double-page spread. This text should be based on the presentation and will form groundwork for a planned publication and exhibition on the topic.
All texts will be corrected in advance and discussed with the lecturers. The first submission of the texts is on 23.06. They will then be discussed in private on 30.06. between 13:30 and 17:00 (approx. 20 minutes each, exact dates to be distributed).
The final submission of the revised texts is 01.08.2023!
There is the possibility to do an additional practical exercise. More information will follow in the introductory session.
