The title of the lecture is of course wrong. It should correctly read: Theories of Culture, plural!
"Culture" is a European term. Its roots go back to Roman antiquity. However, it gained momentum especially in modern times: in the course of the discovery and conquest of new countries, the confrontation with foreign languages, religions and ways of life, and finally through the alienated view of the self-evident facts of our own world.
What is considered culturally conditioned, however, is by no means clear, but depends on different presuppositions - which are themselves bound to culturally specific perspectives.
The lecture deals with exemplary cultural theories from the 17th to the 20th century and asks not only about their explanatory claims, but also about their historical and empirical premises. Last but not least, it will deal with the European self-description that is developed in them.
