Course Contents
Durability is an essential property for the service life of concrete. Comprehensive knowledge
on variours damage mechanisms for concrete are discussed. Based on this, students will learn
practical measures to increase the durability of concrete.

The main topics are:
- Fundamentals of concrete durability (microstructure, capillary transport mechanisms, crack
formation and propagation).
- Attacks on concrete and reinforcement (based on exposition classes according to DIN EN 206
and DIN 1045-2).
- Increasing the durability of concrete (through recipe adjustments or post-treatments).

As part of the course, students produce test specimens and examine their durability. At the end
of the semester, results are to be presented and submitted in the form of a report.

Literature
Literature will be announced at the beginning of the course.

Preconditions
Recommended: Werkstoffe im Bauwesen (13-02-M001/8) (or comparable basic module about
concrete)

Further Grading Information
qualification goals:
After the students have successfully completed the module, they can:
- understand chemical and physical interactions between concretes and their environment and
to determine the impact on durability
- assess the durability of concrete by means of tests
- develop concrete for a predetermined service life- to propose post-measures for increasing the
durability of concrete
