Course Contents
The seminar “Soil Pollution” has the objective to deal with soil degradation, different soil pollutants and their effects, risk assessments and legal basics as well as soil protection. Within the seminar you get the opportunity to become thoroughly familiar with all groups of soil pollutants and discuss current issues in global soil pollution and protection.

Learning contents: Soil functions and their degradation; Pollutant sources and migration; Soil pollutant groups: Metals, Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), Pesticides, Micro- and nanoplastics,  Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), radioisotopes; Legislation and social interactions; Investigation of soil pollutants and risk assessment; Remediation measures and precautionary soil protection.

Learning outcomes: The students know how to describe different soil pollutant groups and their physico-chemical properties as well as ecotoxicological effects in soil environments. They are able to communicate pathways and processes with control the environmental fate of pollutants and can access the relevance for soil functions and remediation potentials.

Sustainability Reference of the Course Contents
Worldwide, soils and their functions are damaged by the release of pollutants, which contradicts the sustainable use and conservation of soil as a resource and habitat. The course discusses the effects of various pollutants on soils and their sustainable control or containment of emissions in a global perspective
