Offizielle Kursbeschreibung
In this seminar, we will examine digital comics, digital picturebooks, and related digital narratives (e.g. fanfiction and fanart) - especially those aimed at a child and adolescent audience - and investigate the ways they experiment with the many possibilities the digital format offers in terms of production and reader engagement. We will learn ways to read and analyse visual media and engage with the concepts of multimodality, inter- and transmediality, as well as interactivity in the digital space.??

As a case study, we will examine Alice Oseman’s "Osemanverse" and her popular webcomic-turned-tv-adaptation Heartstopper, including fan/reader engagement and productions in spaces such as social media. Moreover, we will investigate a corpus of digital picturebooks which, "in response to the COVID-19 pandemic [emerged in the form of] downloadable multimodal visual narratives that offer information, entertainment, and support for families and young people" (Duckels and Ryder, 2021, p.138), including their circulation, translation, and mediation. Lastly, we will investigate the format of picturebook apps (it will be necessary to purchase one or two selected picturebook apps for a few euros each). Please note that this is a block seminar occurring in mid-February; the full seminar plan and readings will be uploaded by early December. All mandatory reading will be made available in English.
