The Corinthian Order
The Corinthian column order is one of the five classical column orders, which, due to its high decorative value in antiquity, but also in classically influenced modern architecture, gained popularity in the design of public spaces.
Based on selected examples, a systematic overview of the chronological development of the Corinthian column order and its regional characteristics will be given. Special forms (e.g. figural capitals) and the Modern reception (e.g. State Archives Darmstadt) will also be discussed.
The goal of the course is to teach the specialized vocabulary for architectural description and to build a knowledge of monuments.
Assignment: Presentation on a selected building of Corinthian order and its concise written elaboration including a self-made graphic part (tracing of a Corinthian capital or a single decorative element of the order).
Group work allowed; presentation and written elaboration in English also accepted.
