After the Second World War and the founding of the federal state of Hesse in 1946, a new era in architectural history began that still has an impact today. In the seminar we want to get an overview of the reconstruction efforts, but also of the intellectual concepts (e.g., during the "Darmstadt Talks") and political-social framework conditions and will deal with "Hessen in reconstruction" from the late 1940s to the end of the 1950s. The spatial focus will be on Frankfurt and southern Hesse, but also include comparisons to other federal states and the GDR. The focus will be on public and post-war housing construction; both of which are relevant construction projects that are controversially discussed today.
