Course Contents
The preservation of existing buildings is becoming increasingly important for reasons of environmental protection and resource conservation. In the lecture typical materials and constructions for historical buildings are explained. This includes repair possibilities for materials and structural rehabilitations. Moreover the energetic renovation according to building physics principles is elucidated. In addition, building pollutants that may reveal during such measures are also presented. Finally, a short introduction to the legal basis in connection with damage claims is lectured. The students will independently look for typical damage cases of buildings in Darmstadt and analyse them. Results will be reported and presented as part of their student work.

After the students have successfully completed the module, they should be able to:
- understand the properties of typical materials and construction applied in existing buildings
- to propose proper repair and rehabilitation measures
- to apply building physical methods for enery efficient rehabilitation of existing buildings
- recognize frequently appearing pollutants in existing buildings
- be familiar with basic legal issues applicable for rehabilitation of buildings
