Course Contents
Beyond the literary world of courtly novels and minnesang, there are numerous textual and pictorial sources that bring us closer to the everyday life of large sections of the population in the Middle Ages: Knowledge literature, legal texts (such as charters, legal codifications, court records), travelogues, sermons, medical guides, cooking recipes and much more. In the seminar, we will read and translate examples of these genres together and analyse them with regard to functionality, regionality and the development of terminology, for example. Other sources such as pictures and illustrations, architecture and maps will be consulted.
