The English and German-language seminar teaches the basics of the sociology of neighborhoods. Various concepts as well as perspectives and interfaces of different sociological research fields and neighboring disciplines are outlined and current problems of neighborhood and district research are identified. On the one hand, we explore the “small-scale sections” in the overall urban context, but also their weight as spaces to be negotiated and sometimes contested. The politicization of neighbourhoods, e.g. with regard to urban segregation, neighbourhood management, participation and involvement, lifestyles, neighbourhood tourism, demonstrations or crime assessments are relevant.
Didactically, the seminar aims to teach the basics of scientific work. For this reason, the participating students will be given the task of leading a session in individual or group work, which will be carried out by means of presentations, the use of didactic methods as well as sensible structuring and division of labor. Excursions to selected neighborhoods can also be considered. You will receive the exact performance requirements in writing at the constituent meeting. A willingness to read English-language texts and to take the seminar in English by arrangement is a prerequisite.
