In this seminar, we will examine Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's seminal work of German-language Bildungsroman, Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship.  The Bildungsroman provides a rationale for the humanities, and German language teaching in particular, that remains valid to this day: to develop a critical view of the world and oneself through the critical analysis of art and literature. In this seminar, we will explore the novel piece by piece, while also delving deeper into the historical and literary-theoretical contexts. This will require a considerable amount of reading each week, for which you should plan at least three hours.
