Course objectives:
Analyze discourse across cultures, genres, and platforms.
Compare strategies in news, political, institutional, social media, and public discourse.
Identify ideologies, power relations, stance, and multimodal resources in communication.
Plan and execute a comparative discourse study using rigorous methods.

Preconditions
Basic knowledge of linguistics, communication, or discourse analysis recommended but not mandatory.
Students must be able to read and discuss academic English.

Official Course Description
This seminar examines how discourse constructs, negotiates, and contests social realities across languages, cultures, and communication platforms. Students will conduct comparative analyses of a wide variety of materials, including news articles, political speeches and debates, official institutional documents, social media posts, and public discourse from different countries.
The course emphasizes cross-cultural, cross-platform, and cross-genre comparisons, exploring how meaning, ideology, identity, and power are expressed differently across contexts. The seminar integrates Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), multimodal analysis, and interactional pragmatics, with attention to visual, textual, and social dimensions of discourse.
Students actively engage in group discussions, case studies, and mini-projects, developing the ability to design and execute comparative discourse research, justify methodological choices, and communicate findings effectively.

Additional Information
Students may use native languages in group analysis but final submissions and presentations are in English.
Attendance and active participation required.
