ZU-
HAUS
The typology of the ‘Zu-Haus’ – the small annex next to the farmhouse, frequently serving as a retreat for older family members in their retirement – is an expression of continuous expansion. These additional spaces create independent units that are closely connected to the main building, allowing for both social proximity and individual privacy.

In view of the pressing need of affordable housing, the large-scale use of inner-city public parking spaces increasingly appears to be an untapped potential for urban development policy. In this respect, the typology of the annex is being transferred to urban spaces around inner-city public parking spaces, including parallel, perpendicular and diagonal parking spaces, for subsequent additions. The supplemented small space reservoirs enable a variety of living and working forms in urban contexts such as Gründerzeit neighbourhoods, thus contributing to a more vibrant and mixed urban structure.

Based on an exemplary reference analysis of three typical Gründerzeit neighbourhoods in Berlin, Leipzig and Frankfurt, small-scale urban structures are to be developed that enable new qualities of living and working as redensification interventions on parking spaces. These designs will be further developed in an iterative process in a joint workshop, modelled and tested for their potential as lively, scale-appropriate and functionally sensible ‘additional homes’.

The seminar will impart a critical awareness of existing spatial and social challenges in urban development and, at the same time, promote a deeper understanding of constructive and typological solutions down to the design-defining details.
