Symbolization in Architecture: Analogy as the First Stage
In this seminar, students will explore the complex process of symbolization in architecture and urban planning. The focus lies on the first stage of this four-part developmental model: analogy. Analogy functions as a fundamental mechanism for conveying meaning by relating architectural forms and spaces to familiar images, natural phenomena, or cultural archetypes.
The seminar begins with an introduction to the overall concept of symbolization, which consists of four interrelated phases: analogy, schematization, allegorization, and finally, symbolization in the narrower sense.
This course serves as the first in a planned series of four interlinked seminars, each dedicated to one of these phases. Together, we will analyze examples from architectural history and contemporary practice, and engage in small design exercises to explore the principle of analogy both practically and theoretically.
