Der Verlust biologischer Vielfalt zählt zu den zentralen Herausforderungen des 21. Jahrhunderts. Studien zeigen, dass die Geschwindigkeit des Artensterbens die natürliche Hintergrundrate um ein Vielfaches übersteigt. Dieser Prozess destabilisiert ganze Ökosysteme und gefährdet grundlegende Funktionen der Biosphäre. Biodiversität ist dabei kein bloßer Zusatzwert, sondern die Grundlage stabiler Ökosysteme sowie für langfristigen Wohlstand, Gesundheit und gesellschaftliche Stabilität. Ökosysteme regulieren Klima und Wasserhaushalt, sichern Bodenfruchtbarkeit, ermöglichen Bestäubung und liefern genetische Ressourcen für Medizin und Landwirtschaft.
Vor diesem Hintergrund soll ein Institut entworfen werden, das Forschung, Feldarbeit und Wissensvermittlung integriert. Neben Laboren umfasst es Außenbereiche für Monitoring, Experimente und ökologische Untersuchungen. Zentral ist die architektonische Verknüpfung von Gebäude, Landschaft und Seelandschaft, sodass Forschung, Natur und Öffentlichkeit räumlich und funktional miteinander verschränkt werden.

The loss of biodiversity is one of the key challenges of the 21st century. Studies show that the rate of species extinction far exceeds the natural background rate. This process destabilizes entire ecosystems and jeopardizes fundamental functions of the biosphere. Biodiversity is not merely an added benefit, but the foundation of stable ecosystems as well as long-term prosperity, health, and social stability. Ecosystems regulate climate and water balance, ensure soil fertility, enable pollination, and provide genetic resources for medicine and agriculture. Against this backdrop, an institute is to be designed that integrates research, fieldwork, and knowledge dissemination. In addition to laboratories, it includes outdoor areas for monitoring, experiments, and ecological studies. Central to the design is the architectural integration of the building, landscape, and lake scenery, so that research, nature, and the public are spatially and functionally intertwined.
