scuola verticale milano
In the urban fabric at the heart of Milan, a liceo can be thought of as a vertical urban space that spatially intertwines learning, encounters and urban life. Instead of being a place for frontal knowledge transfer, the Scuola Verticale sees itself as a spatial laboratory for differentiated learning and working, in which encounters, cooperation and social skills can be spatially experienced and promoted.
In the spirit of urban repair, the Liceo is to be carefully woven into the historical morphology of the city and continue the fabric with an independent attitude. In the polarity between openness and intimacy, we seek an appropriate atmosphere, characterful and poetic spaces and spatial sequences that stimulate the senses, support learning and at the same time allow for personal development. The spaces in between, thresholds, transitions and spatial relationships inside and outside, between the different learning spaces and opposite the city and the adjacent green space, must be carefully examined and modulated into a coherent tectonic.
The examination of space and structure, rhythm and arrangement, material, mass and scale is an integral part of the design. Biogenic materials, constructive logic and tectonic precision should ensure legibility, atmosphere and sustainability.
