JUSTITIA
The separation of powers enshrined in the German Basic Law is a core principle of democracy intended to prevent the abuse of power. State authority is divided into three independent branches that mutually oversee one another: the legislative, the executive, and the judiciary.
This semester, we will focus on the judiciary and examine the building typology of the courthouse. Together, we will explore the internal interdependencies that judicial buildings must accommodate in order to ensure that court proceedings can be conducted safely and appropriately.
For this purpose, we have chosen Bordeaux as our site. There, we can visit and analyse a courthouse complex originating from several historical periods, including an extension designed by Richard Rogers.
