Lehrinhalte
To put it bluntly: literary history emerges because the overwhelming majority of what has been written and read historically is forgotten. If this so-called "Great Unread" is a conditio sine qua non  of literary history, it does not describe a neutral process, but has a whole series of biases. In the seminar we will focus on the gender bias. If you look at who belongs to the classics of German literature of the goethezeit, you will almost exclusively encounter men. Why is that?  Unlike in England and France, the classic period of German literature coincided with the transition to the aesthetics of autonomy and the genius era, which wanted to banish all non-artistic purposes from poetry. The contemporary novels by women in particular fell victim to this ideology, which were dismissed as trivial or tendentious literature, although or perhaps because they were immensely popular.

It is highly recommended that you also attend the digital exercise for the seminar, which takes place immediately afterwards.
