Would you like to improve your speaking, writing, and reading abilities in English for social sciences? Then this course is for you. This course focuses on the communication needs of students majoring or with an interest in history, sociology, political science and related fields. The course combines in-class activities about relevant topics with the instructor and classmates with opportunities to increase vocabulary, to better speaking skills, and to improve facility in writing. The course will be based around weekly readings in academic English that are chosen specifically to assist students in those areas to increase confidence in communicating in English about their scholarly interests. It may be especially helpful to students preparing to write a bachelor's or master's thesis in English.

Students are evaluated on the following criteria:
- Two 500-word writing assignments, 15% each
- Two vocabulary quizzes, 10% each
- Active class participation, including weekly 5-8 page reading, 20%
- Final oral exam, 30%

A score of at least 65 on the placement test
