According to UNHCR, the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide is at its highest ever. In Europe, the so-called refugee crisis has brought the issue of forced migration at the forefront, together as it has crystallised tensions in the political debates, within and between countries. Forced migration, may it be cross-border or internal, is highly intertwined with world politics. The causes, consequences and responses of forced migration are all issues international by nature and/or of great relevance for international relations, both as political practice and field of study. This course will explore the multifaceted relationship between forced migration and international relations. By bringing together different academic disciplines, this course aims to provide theoretical and empirical tools to understand and analyse key issues related to the conceptualisation, generation and mitigation of forced migration in international relations.
