ENKO IV DESIGN
WOODEN DENSIFIERS
In view of the scarcity of living space in Darmstadt and in the context of the universally sought-after inner development, five urban gaps in the Martinsviertel are to be filled with timber construction, thus repairing the stone urban fabric of the Wilhelminian period in an appropriate expression. The town house to be developed is intended to provide a typological answer for the 'living of tomorrow'. Since professional work is becoming individualized, more flexible in terms of time and spatially unbounded, answers must be sought to the dwindling strict juxtaposition of living and working, working time and leisure time. The first floor should contribute to vibrant urban life with various public or commercial uses.
In each case, an inlay of wood is sought that is characterized by an architectural dialogue with the context, subtle interfaces, spatial transitions and architectural interstices and makes the transformation of the site tangible. Conceptually and design-wise, the aim is to develop a meaningful, meaningful and graceful spatial structure with independent and characterful atmospheres.
From the triad - type, topos, tectonics - of the particularity of the location, the functional requirements and the logic of the construction, an original form is to be developed that is more than just form. Beyond the spatial disposition and materialization, an understanding of constructive joints should be taught and enabled to implement architectural intentions. In order to recognize the interaction between the detail and the whole, the design is worked on in depth and the construction is detailed up to the 1:1 scale.
