Course Contents
In the upcoming semester, we are focusing on an area to the east of the harbor district in Offenbach am Main that is currently used as a parking lot and is a key location in Offenbach's urban development. The task is to develop an appealing urban development concept and translate this into a design that strengthens the connection between the banks of the Main, the harbor and the city center. The central issue will always be how to deal with flooding.
Challenges of the design:

- Closing the gap between the banks of the Main and the harbor: Development of a spatial concept that creates an attractive connection between the existing structures on the harbor and the banks of the Main. The aim is to design an appealing start to the quarter.
- Link with the city center: Investigation and design of connections that link the new quarter with Offenbach's city center via Mainstrasse. The height difference between the riverbank and Mainstrasse also plays a role here.
- Flood protection and architecture: Typologies and building details, dealing with flooding and at the same time creating high-quality urban spaces.
- Design of a lively riverside space: Development of an attractive public space that integrates different uses and makes the river a central element to be experienced.
- First floor zoning on the waterfront: Creation of a functional and high-quality first floor use that contributes to the revitalization of the riverside area.

The design calls for an examination of urban development and open space planning issues as well as an architectural response to the special conditions of the location (flooding). In addition to a convincing urban planning idea, strategies for sustainable, mixed-use and future-oriented neighborhoods are developed.
