ARTEFATTO ET RELIQUIA - Transformare Torcello

The traces of Byzantine, Romanesque and medieval architecture reflect the importance of the former trading center of Torcello in the laguna morta, north of Venice. The Museo Provinciale di Torcello traces human settlement in two 14th century palazzi with a rich collection of various artifacts such as the throne of Attila.

By expanding the collection, we are looking for a poetic dialog between yesterday and tomorrow, an overlapping and respectful addition of different historical layers. From the interfaces, transitions and architectural interstices, we want to think the present out of the past with characterful and diverse spaces, so that a new whole is created through the addition. The starting point is the multi-layered traces that are to be carefully and courageously transcended through a contextual interpretation and meaningfully, independently and contemporarily supplemented and expanded. A new architectural layer of time is to be sought that enriches the historical narrative and makes the transformation of the site tangible.

The knowledge of topos, typology and tectonics imparted in individual aspects is to be applied and combined with the elementary questions of architecture on space, structure and material to create a meaningful whole. Together we will study the site in Torcello and also visit the Biennale to find an answer to the task with a trained eye.
