Sufficiency, as an essential component of sustainable planning, is a strategy aimed at reducing resource consumption by diminishing the demand for goods, services, and, in the context of construction, simplifying the built environment: a reduction in constructed space. However, who finds it easy to be rational? Who willingly restricts themselves when such limitation is perceived as deprivation? Our minds are shaped by a growth-oriented society where an abundance of space is typically positively connoted and associated with high social status.
In this seminar, we will first engage with the topic on a theoretical level and collaboratively develop foundational insights for an ongoing research project titled "Living Well in Small Spaces." A comprehensive review of literature and projects, along with analyses of built examples, will help us understand which qualities beyond size are crucial for designing good living environments.
In addition to theoretical exploration, we aim to gain practical experience of what it means to live in limited space with little privacy. Conventions will be questioned. The goal is reflection: Which spatial configurations are perceived as deprivation, and what kind of "comfort" is indispensable for the individual? The confined space of a sailing yacht will provide the perfect setting for our one-week real-life laboratory.

The seminar cannot be selected at the seminar bazaar.
