[b]A TALE OF AN ISLAND ON PEARL RIVER
REGENERATIVE URBAN DESIGN FOR CHANGZHOU ISLAND IN GUANGZHOU
Designing Resilience Global 2025[/b]
The Designing Resilience competition has been launched to stimulate an in-depth discussion on innovative ideas to strengthen resilience and sustainability. The competition seeks forward-looking architectural and urban design concepts and innovative technologies to strengthen the resilience of urban communities. The competition entries will be developed by 11 universities and presented at an international symposium in Guangzhou.
"A tale of an island on Pearl River" seeks a new development concept and design methods for the island of Changzhou in the fascinating Pearl River Delta to respond to the challenges of urbanisation and climate change. In the middle of China's densely populated and economically prosperous region, surrounded by the major cities of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Foshan and Donguggua, the question of future-oriented and climate-positive solutions for this place in the fragile landscape of the delta arises.
The Pearl River Delta is the most densely populated urban region in the world, encompassing major cities such as Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, and Dongguan. As a pioneer of China’s economic reform, the region has become a vital economic hub and a leading manufacturing center. Known as the “Eastern Gate” of Guangzhou, Changzhou Island has been considered a maritime stronghold. During the Opium Wars, the island was heavily fortified with cannons to resist British invasions. Unrounded by the Pearl River, the island features undulating hills and is characterized by its subtropical countryside landscape. Changzhou Island is a historical and cultural preservation district within Guangzhou. The island is home to over 100 tourist attractions, including many political, military, religious, and historical sites.
“A tale of an island on Pearl River” sucht nach einem neuen Entwicklungskonzept und neuen Design Methoden für die Insel Changzhou im faszinierenden Pearl River Delta, um auf die Herausforderungen von Urbanisierung und Klimawandel zu antworten. Mitten in der dichten und wirtschaftlich prosperierenden Region Chinas, umgeben von den großen Städten Hong Kong, Shenzen Foshan und Donguggua, stellt sich die Frage im sensiblen Landschaftsraum des Deltas nach vorrausschauenden und klimapositiven Lösungen für diesen Ort. Die Insel Changzhou, bekannt als das „östliche Tor“ von Guangzhou, war lange eine maritime Festung. Während der Opiumkriege wurde die Insel mit Kanonen befestigt, um den britischen Invasionen zu widerstehen. Die Insel ist von sanften Hügeln umgeben und zeichnet sich durch eine subtropische Landschaft aus. Changzhou Island ist ein historisches und kulturelles Denkmalschutzgebiet der Stadt Guangzhou. Die Insel beherbergt über 100 Touristenattraktionen, darunter viele politische, militärische, religiöse und historische Stätten.

Kurs a: Alle Studienanfänger des ersten Studienjahres aus dem Fachbereich Architektur (optional mit Studierenden anderer Fachbereiche) bearbeiten in Gruppenarbeit gemeinsam eine Aufgabenstellung. Sie erarbeiten sich von Beginn an für das (Architektur-)studieum wesentliche Einblicke in die Vielfalt und Methodik des Fachs. Die Aufgabenstellung des einwöchigen interdisziplinären Studienprojektes ist hinreichend komplex und offen, so dass die Studierenden die fachbereichsinternen interdiziplinären Aspekte der Aufgabe bewältigen. Die Studierenden müssen einen eigenen Lösungsweg finden und vertreten. Sie werden durch ausgebildete Teambegleiter aus anderen Fachbereichen und Fachbegleitern aus den verschiedenen Fachgruppen des Fachbereichs Architektur methodisch und fachlich angeleitet.

Official Course Description
Techniques of scientific work
The course is aimed at Master’s students and should ideally be taken in the 1st or 2nd semester of the Master’s program. The workshop provides an exemplary introduction to the basics of scientific work, especially with regard to the research module. In addition to an introduction to scientific work (library research, citation, scientific writing, etc.), you will gain insight into specific methodological approaches of the Subject Groups A to F of Department 15. Students are required to prepare a short exposé on a topic with a research question and thesis, the methodological approach and the current state of research.
We have set up a comprehensive Moodle course to support you with the preparation of the exercises in the Scientific Work workshop.
